For iPhone

Focus while reading

Warraq turns on Do Not Disturb when you start a reading session and turns it off when you finish, so no notification interrupts your page. iPhone doesn’t let apps turn on a Focus themselves, so Warraq posts a brief notification that two small automations in Shortcuts pick up. You set them up just once.

These steps are for iOS 27. On earlier versions, they differ slightly.

Reading this on a computer? Scan the code with your iPhone’s camera to open it there.

Add them with a tap

  1. On your iPhone, tap “Start focus”, then “Add Shortcut” in Shortcuts. Do the same with “End focus”.
  2. Both automations arrive switched off: open Shortcuts, go to “Automation”, and turn on their switches.
  3. So they run without asking you, choose “Run Immediately” in each automation and turn off “Notify When Run”.

Check before you read

In Shortcuts, under “Automation”, you’ll find Warraq’s two automations, each with a green switch:

A gray switch means the automation is off, so Do Not Disturb won’t turn on. Switch it on.

Or build them yourself

You’ll need these two titles. Copy them rather than typing them: a single different letter, capital or space stops the automation.

  • Reading session started
  • Reading session ended
  1. Open Shortcuts, tap “+”, and name the shortcut “Warraq: Start focus”.
  2. Add the “Set Focus” action and set it to turn Do Not Disturb on “Until Turned Off”.
  3. Tap “Edit”, then “Automation”. Choose “Notification”, then the Warraq app.
  4. In “Title”, paste “Reading session started”.
  5. Choose “Run Immediately”, turn off “Notify When Run”, then tap “Done”.
  6. Build “Warraq: End focus” the same way, with “Set Focus” turning Do Not Disturb off and the title “Reading session ended”.

Prefer a Focus just for reading? Create a “Reading” Focus in Settings, then pick it in “Set Focus” in both shortcuts instead of Do Not Disturb.

Once they’re set up

  1. In Warraq, keep “Focus while reading” on in Profile, and allow notifications when it asks.
  2. Start a session: the “Reading session started” notification shows for a moment, and Do Not Disturb turns on while you read.
  3. Do Not Disturb stays on until you end the session, even if you take a break or leave Warraq. Then “Reading session ended” shows, and it turns off.

Questions

Why a notification?

Because iPhone doesn’t let any app turn on a Focus itself. The automation waits for Warraq’s notification with that title and turns the Focus on or off. The notification then clears after a few seconds, so they don’t pile up.

Do Not Disturb doesn’t turn on?

Make sure Warraq’s notifications are allowed, that both automations have a green switch in “Automation”, and that each title was copied exactly.

It turns on when I open Warraq, or off when I leave it?

You have another automation that runs when Warraq opens or closes. Delete it: this setup doesn’t need it.

Can Warraq see my notifications?

No. The automations run on your iPhone itself, look only at Warraq’s notifications, and send nothing to Warraq.

How do I turn it off?

In Warraq, turn off “Focus while reading” in Profile, and it stops posting the two notifications. You can delete the shortcuts whenever you like.

What about Android?

No shortcuts needed: Warraq turns on Do Not Disturb itself when your session starts and turns it off when it ends, with a permission you grant once in Profile.
